Helping with transition

We know that transition to secondary school is a big step. There are various ways we can help you and your son in his move from primary school. Below is a snapshot of the comprehensive programme of support and activities your son may experience at Forest in a typical school year. Our Year 7 team - Head of Year, Deputy Head of Year and Form Tutors - are always happy to answer any queries you may have.

  • Year 6 Induction Day - New students meet our current year 7, and together they tour the school and experience some of our lessons and activities.
  • Year 6 Parents’ evening - View a selection of activities and work, meet our management team and Year 7 staff. You will also receive a Welcome booklet.

  • Uniform Day - Get practical advice from those ‘in the know’! Organised by our Parents Association you can buy your son’s school uniform and equipment, and meet other parents.

  • Peer Mentors - In his first term your son’s tutor group will be introduced to older boys who have been trained to support new students.

  • Parent Support  - Our Parent Support Adviser provides advice by phone and through the school web site.

  • Learning Support - A support programme in the summer term specifically for those students identified as vulnerable or having special educational needs.

  • Summer holiday camps - Day camps where your son can try out a range of activities like archery, rugby, football, cricket and athletics and meet students and PE staff.

  • First Day - To help new students to settle in, on the first day Year 7 students register earlier than other years. They also go to lunch earlier for the first week.

  • Year 7 Day - In the Autumn term, students are taken off timetable to take part in team building activities so they can get to know each other and develop their skills.

  • Tutors - Your son will be allocated a Tutor who will monitor their progress and well being during the year. You can contact the Tutor or Head/ Deputy Head of year if you have any concerns about your son.

  • Tracker - Through a link on the school web site you can remotely access and track your son’s performance and attendance at any time during the academic year. Click here for more information and go to Qu.21 - Parents Portal.

  • Residential Week - At the end of Year 7 your son has the opportunity to experience a stay away from home for a week at an educational centre. A chance to enjoy a range of activities with his friends.
