Hackathon Event at Forest

3rd July 2024

16Earlier this month, The Forest School held its very first hackathon coordinated by Year 10 students Koen Cheng, Georgii Tiutin, and Karim Said. The Hackathon was a huge success; bringing together Year 9 and 10 students for half a day of creativity and innovation where many brilliant and innovative minds created stunning web pages. Each and every student boasted immense creativity. Just in case you’re wondering, a Hackathon is a social coding event that brings computer programmers and other interested people together to improve upon or build new software programs.

During the event, Participants were divided into three teams: Yellow, Blue, and White. Koen and Karim taught the Yellow team about coding languages HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, enabling students to create their very own website; while Georgii oversaw the Blue team's innovative projects and the White team's competition for a £20 voucher prize. The workshop led by Koen and Karim where the Yellow team, with approximately 30 participants, learnt the basics of web development and how websites on the Internet are created and the basis of all websites. on the World Wide Web. The White team, guided by Georgii, put forth impressive projects, and the White team presented many brilliant projects from talented minds. At the end of the event, the judges awarded Venkatraman Vasudevan (Year 10) second place, winning7 a Cadbury Caramel bar, and Aarav Rathi (Year 9) won first place, winning the £20 voucher prize.

Overall, the Hackathon was a brilliant experience. We combined innovation, creativity, and enjoyment into one brilliant event that exceeded our furthest expectations. I sincerely hope to offer this experience again next year with my colleagues Koen and Georgii and we all look forward to seeing next year's innovators thrive!
