GCSE Options
Choosing GCSE options is a key milestone in a student’s educational journey, and at The Forest School, we provide comprehensive guidance to help students and families make informed decisions. Our curriculum is designed to balance core subjects, enhanced curriculum pathways, and a wide array of optional subjects, ensuring that students can tailor their education to their strengths, aspirations, and interests.
Core Curriculum
Every student will study the core subjects of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, and Science (either Combined Science or Separate Sciences). Citizenship or Religious Studies is also a part of the core curriculum, fostering personal development and understanding of the world.
Enhanced Curriculum
Students are encouraged to select at least one language (French or Spanish) and one humanities subject (History or Geography) as part of the enhanced curriculum. This combination aligns with the English Baccalaureate (EBacc), recognized by employers and universities as a valuable foundation for future education and career opportunities.
Optional Subjects
In addition to core and enhanced options, students can choose from a diverse range of subjects, including Art, Business, Drama, Computer Science, Physical Education, and more. Each subject is carefully designed to develop skills, knowledge, and experiences that prepare students for further education and a variety of career paths.
Key Dates and Support
Our structured options process ensures students are fully supported every step of the way. Key dates include the Year 8 Options Evening and assemblies, where students and families can explore subjects in detail, consult with teachers, and receive expert advice.
Explore the options and make choices that will shape a successful and fulfilling future at The Forest School. For more detailed information, refer to our full Options Booklet.
Not sure what to choose?
If you are not sure about what to choose, talk to your teachers, your tutor and your parents, carers or guardians or have a look online at National Careers Service or investigate through Future Finder
GCSE gradings changed in Sept 2015. A*-C became 9-1. Please see the Ofqual explanation of the way grades have altered.
We are committed to achieving the highest standards in our schools. That’s why we have revised our GCSE qualifications in England to make them more demanding. We have done this so our young people have the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in 21st century Britain, and to match those of their peers in high-performing education systems elsewhere in the world.
